How did the idea of The Bolder come to life?
The Bolder was not just any other accommodation for travelers, it was a vision that came to life when Tom B. Norland bought 180 hectares of untouched land. Originally, there was a plan to build a series of hermit huts but soon realized that he wanted to do something more adventurous. He wanted to create something that would reimagine the potential of the plot and inspire a whole new appreciation of the unforgettable fjord.
What were the most important elements in the making of the Bolder?
Views, quality, nordic luxury, and the desire to create something in harmony with nature.
Who is it for?
The cabins are designed as high-quality accommodation for guests who want to enjoy Norwegian nature and fjords, the views and each other.
What kind of an experience do you want people to have here?
“My intention was to give visitors a front row view to one of the best-known fjords in the world. The border between inside and outside had to be blurred to convey the feeling of floating in nature.”
Tom B Norland, Owner
About the architecture:
Star Lodges
Architect: Snøhetta
"With the Bolder Lodges, we wanted to capture the transitional drama between the fjord and the mountain. They are raised from the terrain – making minimal impact to the nature as well as to enhance the experience that they are at hovering over the fjord.
The Lodges have a mirrored design, which means that the roof and underside have the same design for the visual effect of weightlessness. The approaches to the cabins are raised above the terrain with walkways made of corten steel, as well as careful lighting for the most natural experience possible – and perhaps most importantly, a minimal footprint in nature.
The Bolder cabins are placed discreetly into the existing terrain between the tenaciously growing pine trees, where the surroundings are treated with respect and where everything that has been done, can be reversed – so that in the future it is possible to restore the entire site.
Inside, the dramatic view with the wide connection to the fjord is main focus. Top quality in every aspect makes the overall experience something completely unique.”

The Sky Lodges are designed as a two-floor cube – wrapped in Canadian cedar wood. They are built on a single column to minimize the footprint in the landscape. Due to its unique design it will gently sway on windy days. With fully adjustable beds you are as close to sleeping in the clouds as you will ever get.
