Located on the edge of Lysefjorden in Norway, The Bolder represents a unique collaboration between entrepreneur Tom Bjarte Norland and Snøhetta. This initiative aims to create authentic experiences that connect guests with the landscape's natural beauty while adhering to sustainability and thoughtful design principles.
“We are proud to work with some of the best within architecture and design, giving you a highly curated experience.”
The Concept Behind The Bolder
The Bolder project was launched in 2020 with its first two cabins, Sky Lodge. It was extended in 2023 with four new cabins designed by Snøhetta, namely Star Lodge and Grand Lodge. The Bolder was designed to provide an exceptional retreat that celebrates the surrounding environment. The vision emphasizes community engagement and aims to enhance visitors' experience through interactions with nature. This focus on authenticity guides all aspects of the project, from design to functionality.
Architectural Integration with Nature
The Bolder consists of three differently styled cabins, Sky Lodge, Star Lodge and Grand Lodge, each elevated on large pillars. This architectural choice minimizes environmental impact and creates an illusion of floating above the fjord. The cabins feature large glass facades that seamlessly blend the indoors with the outdoor landscape, allowing guests to fully appreciate the natural surroundings.
Sustainable Material Choices
Sustainability is a core value of The Bolder, reflected in the materials used for construction. The cabins are made from untreated red cedar, designed to age gracefully and blend with the rocky surroundings. Local granite and other site-specific materials were chosen to reinforce the connection to the environment. Additionally, careful planning ensures that any changes can be reversed in the future, preserving the landscape for generations to come.

Minimalist Interior Design
Inside the cabins, a minimalist design approach fosters a tranquil atmosphere. Natural materials in neutral tones enhance the comfort and utility of the space. Each cabin is carefully designed to optimize views of the fjord and the surrounding landscape, providing a soothing, relaxing environment.
The interiors feature functional furniture and lighting from Expo Nova and amenities from Danish design company Vipp, providing kitchens and bathrooms that combine style with everyday practicality. The Norwegian furniture company Eiklund, which shares the values of sustainability, offers sloping armrests for the guests to lean back and take in the over-the-cliff vistas.
Natural light is a critical component of the interior experience, creating a dynamic connection with the outside environment that shifts throughout the day.
